Level D Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is designed for situations where the hazards are minimal and the risk to responders is low. It is primarily utilized in environments where there is no significant risk of hazardous material exposure requiring more advanced protection.

The typical components of Level D PPE include coveralls, which provide a basic barrier against dirt, dust, and some splashes, along with eye protection to safeguard against exposure to irritants or foreign objects. This level of PPE does not require respiratory protection, as the air quality in the operational environment is considered safe. As such, the emphasis is on durability and comfort, enabling responders to perform their duties effectively without encountering serious hazards.

In contrast, other levels of PPE involve more complex gear that is suited for environments with higher risks. Full encapsulating suits are used in Level A, while Level B requires protective suits and respiratory equipment to guard against hazardous vapors or gases. Flame-resistant clothing and helmets pertain to firefighting gear, which is also not specific to handling HAZMAT situations.
